Duplicate listings can cause problems for any business that relies on local search to drive traffic to physical locations. Ideally each business location in the local search ecosystem has no more than a single listing per business data platform, unless it’s a multi-partner practice or a multi-office campus.
The goal is for human users and search engine bots to encounter just one authoritative listing per location on each engine or directory, and a good SEO will make every effort to achieve this. But when it comes to Google’s local product, the stakes associated with duplicate listings are especially high.
